Effective Alternatives to Air Conditioning

Summer gets hot. San Diego air conditioning bills soar in the summer, especially during those irregular heat waves, but as everyone knows, air conditioning is not cheap. Keeping the air conditioning on for even a few hours can put a big dent in your wallet.

If it’s been a while since you’ve had any professional air conditioning repairs, turning on your air conditioning system could actually be bad for your health, causing certain respiratory problems and contaminating indoor air. While nothing can really replace the cooling effects of air conditioning services, you might consider these effective alternatives the next time your home heats up.

An Open Window

You would be surprised how effective an open window can be. That will probably be your first mode of action before turning to your air conditioner. In some cases, it’s enough to thwart the heat, especially if you catch a breeze. If opening one window is not enough, open several. Try to create a through-breeze that travels into your home and allows hot air to travel out.

The time of day you open your window may also play a factor. Chances are your home will be super hot during the day and cool down at night. Open your windows at night to let in the cool air and close them during the day to trap that cool air.

Spray a bed sheet with cold water and use it to cover a window’s opening. The cool, damp sheet will cool the breeze as it passes through, bringing chilled air into your home. The sheet will also shade any sunlight from outside, keeping the temperature down even more.

Fan Power

Fans can be a big help in staying cool and are incredibly cheap. Place one fan facing in by a window and another fan pointing out at an opposite window. This will cause a nice “wind tunnel” effect and help that through breeze make its way through your house. Your ceiling fans can also help with this process.

Of course, fans can be pretty useless if your home is filled with hot air. All you’re doing is essentially blowing that hot air around. To create a simple, makeshift air conditioning system, fill a shallow bowl with ice cubes and place it in front of the fan. As the ice evaporates, the fan will blow the cool air through your home.

Ice and Other Things

A tried and true method of staying cool is wetting your wrists and other pulse points with a bit of cold water. Keep those spots cool by holding and ice cube wrapped in a small towel or face cloth against them. This gives immediate relief and can cool down the entire body for up to an hour.

Avoid generating lots of heat. On super hot days, don’t run the dry cycle on your dishwasher and try air drying your clothes instead of using the dryer. Turn off computers, TVs, and other electronics when they’re not in use as they can generate a lot of heat when left on. Standing over a hot stove will also substantially increase your temperature and your home’s… try a cold sandwich instead (with some ice cream for dessert!).

Checklist for Your First Apartment

Congratulations! You’ve flown the coop and left your parents’ house. Now they can finally find a tenant who’s willing to actually pay for room and board. And that’s all the better, but now that you’re on your own, you’ll need to buy a few things.

Your first apartment is an extremely important facet of your new life. It’ll determine what level of maturity you wish to convey, and that will determine how much time you spend alone in your new digs.

All you need to do is shop around at furniture stores in San Diego for these basic things:

Dinette furniture: This is probably more important than a couch. A dinette is not only a place to eat, but you’re more than likely to make it your desk, entertainment hub (laptop + table), and the perfect setup for a romantic candlelit liaison.

• Bed: You can’t overlook the bed. After all, the average person spends one-third of their life in bed. If you’re the kind of person who needs that huge, soft, fluffy, cloud-like mattress, San Diego is the place to get it. Or maybe you prefer a harder mattress with complete back and shoulder support. It’s your choice. Remember that it’s coming out of your paycheck now, not your allowance.

• Shower caddy: This is something that people never get until they’re standing in the shower without a place to hang their poufs. Do yourself a favor and pick one up while you’re out buying linens and a bedspread to go with that monster canopy bed you’re sure to have for the rest of your life.

• Curtains: Unless you like the idea of people standing outside, watching your silhouette walk from the bathroom to the kitchen, you’ll want to cover up your windows. Curtains can be a great way to accent white walls if you’re renting a generic apartment. Make sure to match them to your bedspread. You’re an adult now, so no more color clashing.

• Futon: This is one piece of furniture that most college kids are well acquainted with. But a futon is much more than a plastic frat fixture. Look for something with a bamboo or wooden frame, something that has a bit more class. It’s still going to provide a spot for your guys or girls to crash on when they visit, but it doesn’t have to look like something you pulled from the side of the street.

Enjoy your new apartment. Make it a place you aren’t embarrassed to show off to your mom.

Make Your Team Shine for Competition Season

When it comes to standing out and gaining that upper edge against the competition, cheer squads can’t rely on their skills alone. Even the best squads need cheerleading uniforms that help them shine, both in competition and when leading crowds at school events. Cheerleading apparel can also make squads stand out and enhance their performances with extras that help a squad score points for originality.

Cheer Uniforms that Stand Out: Creating an original cheer uniform is all about standing apart from the competition. Integrating metallic colors or trim into your uniform and/or pom poms gives your squad a flashy look that will make you stand out from the moment you enter the room.

You can’t change your school colors, but you can accessorize and add extras to your uniform. If your school colors don’t stand out or don’t include a third color, consider making a metallic silver, gold, or bronze tone a complementary part of your uniform’s color scheme. These colors are easy to match to any pre-existing color combination.

Mixing it up can give you the upper edge against the competition, too. Competitive squads utilize several uniforms or costume changes into their routines, which can help show off their range of abilities as a squad. Uniforms are often more appropriate for cheers, while costumes, accessories, and other extras can really enhance a dance routine for competition or the halftime show at a game.

Using Props in Competition:

Don’t forget to find creative new ways to integrate old-fashioned props like the megaphone into your squad’s routine. Squads that don’t project can lose points in competition, so make sure you use megaphones when you need to as a cheer tool, in addition to making them an aesthetic aspect of the performance as well. When megaphones are used as props only in competition, it can reflect poorly on the choreography.

Shoes, body suits, and cheer briefs can be used underneath the base uniform to add color and flash to a uniform as well. Instead of choosing white or black briefs that blend in with your uniform, show off that booty with a solid metallic or bright color, or tye-dye your old white briefs in school colors. The same can be done with full body suits.

Cheer shoes are often forgotten as an accessory. Instead of choosing standard white shoes for your squad, pick shoes that will stand out against the competition and make your squad look unique. Most cheer shoe brands now offer trim in different colors to match your uniform, and some offer custom designs with school colors and logos.

Cheerleading is a great way to bring excitement and team spirit to any sports game. With flashy pom poms and sporty cheerleading clothes, the dances and jumps involved in cheerleading routines can be as impressive and captivating as the game itself. And there are a multitude of jump types that are used to jazz up routines.

Flexibility is one of the most important parts of performing cheerleading jumps successfully. Because this activity requires such extreme movements, cheerleading clothes such as Soffe shorts are created with maximum stretchability. Practice is also a big component of performing successful jumps. Many of the less skilled jumps are perfected first in preparation of more advanced maneuvers, and can help increase flexibility, strength, and muscle memory.

· Around the World - Also known as the pike-out, this jump is a pike that evolves into a toe-touch. The difficulty comes in being able to perform both moves in a short amount of time.

· Double Jump - A double jump is considered to be any jump performed twice in a row.

· Herkie - A Herkie looks much like a long leap, where the arms are held in the opposite position of what the legs are doing.

· Hurdler - This jump uses the “touchdown” arm motion along with one bent knee.

· Pike - This difficult jump places both legs straight out with knees locked and arms out in front.

· Power Jump - A power jump is done without swinging the arms before takeoff. All the power for this jump comes from the legs.

· Spread Eagle Jump - In this jump, the arms are lifted in a V and the legs are spread apart to create an “X” with the body.

· Straight Jump - This jump is a simple jump with a straight up and down motion. The arms are in a “T” or pointed above the head. The straight jump is often practiced to help prep for more difficult jumps.

· Toe-Touch - This jump is performed by straddling the legs straight out to the sides and spreading the arms out in a “T.” The back is kept straight and the legs are brought up high.

· Tuck - In a tuck, the cheerleader pulls the legs up and tucks the knees up to the chest.

Cheerleading jumps are some of most exciting moves in a routine. With multiple arrangements from Herkies to Tucks, increasing complexity and required skill, cheerleading jumps help bring the spirit into stadiums with plenty of flash and sass.

What Kinds of Medical Equipment can be Refurbished?

Although most healthcare providers would prefer to furnish their facilities with brand new medical equipment, the fact is that most will not have the financial means to do so. With the high price of patient-related intervention, it is reassuring to know that quality refurbished machines are available from trusted resources to offer reliable, quality service at affordable savings to those seeking a solution to rising costs.

When looking for refurbished medical devices, make sure you check out several important details noted on the purchasing or lease agreements, including what biomedical repairs have been performed and a technical inspection indicating that the unit operates in premium condition.

EKG

Used EKG machines can allow for more than 50 percent in savings to medical professionals when compared to purchasing brand new models. For hospitals forced to cope with extreme budget cuts, buying refurbished equipment can help to save money while continuing to offer the same standard of care.

The best used EKG machines will have passed through testing under strict conditions to ensure they meet the original manufacturer’s specifications and are completely safe and operational. The units should be carefully cleaned and sterilized to meet safety standards as well. Oftentimes, these models will even still be under warranty for added assurance of their operational abilities.

Electrosurgical

Used electrosurgical units can be guaranteed in quality if you are careful to purchase them from a licensed medical lab equipment dealer. Many licensed dealers with the proper expertise will offer ongoing repair service, including yearly maintenance service, for your unit. Suppliers should also offer to provide necessary spare parts as they are needed. All refurbished equipment available to the public is expected to pass all safety checks as well before being recertified for sale.

Anesthesia

Refurbished anesthesia machines are yet another possible choice for healthcare providers. Various insured and recalibrated units can be purchased or leased by physicians as well as veterinarians seeking reliable alternatives to buying new office equipment. Certified used products will have all internal and external parts inspected and replaced by experienced biomedical technicians to provide maximum performance within the surgical setting. With the strict precautions taken to assure products are reliable and accurate, there is absolutely no need to sacrifice quality over cost when deciding to buy used over new.

As the practice of purchasing refurbished medical devices continues to grow, consumers need to be aware of the variables involved when seeking what they require. Be sure to research qualified distributors to be certain of their professional credentials, guarantees, maintenance programs, on-site availability, and return policies as well as customer service ratings. Comparison shop to obtain the best price on the type of machine that meets your particular requirements. Remember that used inventory will fluctuate, so you may have to be flexible and plan ahead to find the right equipment to satisfy your needs.

What to do After Discovering Child Sexual Abuse

Your worst fear has come true. You never really believed your priest could be capable of sexual abuse, not the man you trusted with your secrets and spirituality.

But there’s been a lot of news in the past several years about the fallibility of priests in the church. How could you have missed the signs all this time?

Hey—derail that train of thought right now. There’s no point in questioning the past, only in where you’ll go from here.

There’s no time to waste, your child deserves quick and effective justice—not a pouting parent with coulda-shoulda-woulda on their mind.

Take these steps to get your child on the path to healing:

• As with any criminal charge, contact your local authorities first. The sooner the better; once an officer is dispatched at the behest of your complaint, a file will be opened. Everything that happens from here on out will be part of public knowledge. If you’re the one that first discovered the abuse, there’s a chance you’ll awaken others who have also known about it, or suspected it, but were too afraid to make it public. The more voices you find, the better.

• Next, contact a priest abuse lawyer. Yes, they exist. That’s how prevalent this kind of thing has become. Take a small comfort in knowing that child abuse lawyers are very good, and they’ll do everything they can to find justice.

• Finally, find therapy and counseling for your young one. They have to know it’s not their fault, and that they were brave and strong for telling the truth. Your sexual abuse lawyer may even be able to point you to quality professional help.

The road to healing is long. And for some, that road doesn’t lead through a court of law, and that’s okay. It’s your healing process, nobody else’s. But for others, healing means seeking justice and using the courts to prevent an alleged guilty person from repeating crimes.

For that, you’ll need a good lawyer and a bit of knowledge about the U.S. criminal justice system, which that lawyer will be happy to provide. And that won’t be all; your lawyer will provide you with the tools you need to find peace. It won’t be instant; your gratification may not come for a long time. After all, investigations and court proceedings generally do not move quickly. But as your family heals personally and spiritually, justice will accompany that healing.

Get the Most Out of Your Vacation Home

There’s something inherently pleasant and thrilling about getting away from it all. Escaping the stresses of the day-to-day life is a great way to recharge and parse out the things that matter from the things that don’t.

Vacation homes remain a popular investment for many, but even with a beautiful Mission Beach property, management of time and resources makes it difficult for a person to completely enjoy having a vacation home. Here are a few tips for getting the most out of your vacation home.

Renting It Out

In this economy, even keeping one home proves to be a hassle, which is why many choose to rent their vacations home out. Leasing your property out allows you to make money when you’re not using your vacation home. With any San Diego property, management of your vacation home is key to ensuring happy tenants and making a profit for yourself.

This can be a difficult road to travel on your own. If your vacation home is in Pacific Beach, property management companies can help you in all your rental and leasing matters. You can think of the property managers as liaisons between you and your tenants. Property managers are specially trained in all aspects of property and can otherwise keep you from getting into any legal trouble while maintaining a steady profit.

Donating to Charity

While it might sound strange, you can actually donate your vacation home to a charity for auction. This will give you a bit of a tax break as well.

The way it works is people attend the auction, bid on a chosen vacation week, and pay their bid sum to the charity. In most cases, the homeowner can deduct the fair market rental value from his or her income taxes. This actually ignores how much was paid to the charity. These are substantial tax deductions that can draw out for several years. Most importantly, you’ll be helping charities and providing a vacation shelter for families.

Increasing the Property Value

As with any investment, you want to increase its value to eventually profit off of it. You can do this quite easily and affordably with your vacation home.

Take the kitchen, for instance. Kitchens are an important part of any living space but also tend to be the most expensive to remodel. Changing kitchen cabinet hardware is affordable and effective. Replace older cabinets with new pulls and self-closing hinges. Adding more open space to a kitchen will also increase value.
