What's on Your Driving Record? Learn to be a Safe Driver

When it comes to getting behind the wheel, the name of the game is safe driving. Sure, it’s fun driving down a stretch of road at night with your favorite tunes playing on the radio, but cars are dangerous and capable of some destructive results. Being a safe driver isn’t difficult as long as you make a habit of it.

Pay Attention to the Road

The average road is littered with billboards, posters, street signs, and more. While these can potentially be distracting, traffic signs tell you everything you need to know about your surroundings. A no outlet sign can help you from reaching a dead end.

As long as you pay attention to the road, you shouldn’t have much trouble staying safe. Unfortunately, the average driver is under the assumption that nothing will happen on the road, that everything remains static. Don’t allow yourself to succumb to distractions, whether it’s putting on makeup or reading through a textbook for some last minute studying. And please, refrain from even touching your phone when you’re driving.

Don’t Drive Drunk

This is pretty obvious. It’s something we learn from school and public service announcements, and yet, people still do it. Over 30 percent of all auto accident fatalities in the U.S. involve drunk drivers.

Alcohol, even at low levels, causes all sorts of impairments, like reduced reaction time, lowered inhibition, and a lack of coordination. At high levels, alcohol will cause blurred vision. Drunk driving is a crime, and you can go to jail if you’re behind the wheel with a blood alcohol content of 0.08 or higher.

Drunk driving is simple to avoid: just don’t do it. There’s nothing wrong with getting some drinks and having a fun time, but if you’re planning on going out for drinks, find an alternative means of travel: public transportation, cabs, or designated drivers. Anything is better than the potentially disastrous consequences of driving while drunk.

So, you feel totally “fine,” right? Well, even if you feel like you’re not going to get into an accident, one wrong move could get you pulled over anyway. A DUI is expensive and creates a giant headache in your life.

Don’t Drive Drowsy

The average person tends to lead a pretty busy life filled with work, family, socializing, and everything in between. It’s pretty easy then to be a bit tired throughout the day, but once tired transitions to exhausted, you may want to consider not getting behind the wheel.

A recent study reported that about 20 percent of all accidents have sleepiness as a contributing factor, and it’s easy to predict what might happen if a person falls asleep at the wheel. Even on a straight road, a sleeping driver will eventually drift off the road and potentially crash into any obstacles, from trees to signs to poles to other cars.

To avoid this scenario, get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis. Sleep deficits can add up and contribute to your feelings of drowsiness on the road. If you’re feeling drowsy on the road, take action immediately. Have a friend take over or find somewhere to take a break and catch some quick Z’s.

Great Decoratiing Idea for Kid's Room

Kids like to have their bedrooms and playrooms decorated in décor they enjoy, just as adults do. Ask your children for some ideas about their favorite colors so you can paint the walls or add new elements to the room to reflect their personalities. Walls don’t have to all be the same color either; try painting walls different colors. Trim in the room can also be painted a different color.

A fantastic way to change up a room quickly at your child’s whim is with kid’s wall stickers. These can be purchased in stores or ordered online in many different themes and sizes. They are designed to be removable, reusable and repositionable. Therefore you can easily put them on walls or furniture and then peel them off and change to a new design any time you want. In addition they are washable, which is very important in a kid’s room. Since most kids like a different book, cartoon, television, or movie character every few months, this is a great way to redecorate the room easily. There are many other designs besides characters or you can request custom- made designs from photos. Add some decorative borders to the walls for an extra décor emphasis. Try flocked, mirrored, and foam fabric designs for an added decorative detail.

Sometimes kids want to use the same character or theme on draperies or curtains. Find some great lamps to use in the kids bedroom or playroom. Make sure the lamps match the theme and are easy for the child to use. Find furniture appropriate for the kids room, they will need dressers, shelves, storage containers, and a desk. Make sure the size of the furniture is appropriate for the kid’s age. The bed will probably be the largest item in the room and should be a major focal point. If you purchase a wooden bed frame it can easily be painted in a fun color your child enjoys. Alternatively look for a theme bed, such as a racecar design. Bunk beds are a good idea for children who share a room or for a child to have a slumber party. Sheets, bedspreads, or comforters are some of the first items seen in a kid’s room. Again find something that complements the theme or colors of the room so the child will be happy to climb into bed at night.

Clever Signs for Your Bachelor Pad

Traffic Sign I

Traffic Sign I (Photo credit: Reverend Pain)

Perhaps the single greatest time in a young man’s life is the year he spends in his bachelor pad. It’s the one place he can make his own without influence from females whatsoever. Often, the decorative influence comes from sports—i.e. signed Yankees memorabilia around the TV, a small toy basketball hoop on the door, a few collectors’ Barry Sanders and Larry Byrd jerseys on the walls.

And don’t forget the road signs.

Big, thin, sturdy and versatile, traffic road signs can act as simple wall hangs, a coffee tables, doors; it’s completely up to the bachelor (and what kind of ladies he wants to impress).

A clever guy might send subliminal messages with a pedestrian crossing sign to communicate masculinity and strength. It shows that this very eligible bachelor can handle his business and still see to it that others in his herd get safely out of harm’s way. Too far-fetched? Maybe.

But there are other warning signs that are popular among bachelors, both for their impression on the ladies and other dudes.

Men at Work” is probably the one single sign that sums it all up. Whether referencing the office or the court, the club or the field, men who have it all together truly are at work. And they’ve got the slammin’ apartment to prove it. It signals to ladies that this man is looking for a good time. After all—work hard, play hard.

Road signs, however, are not all ideal. Some signs are major turn-offs.

For example, any hazard signs that warn of biological hazards, contaminants, wide loads, or anything denoting trouble ahead are a major signal that this particular bachelor pad has nothing to offer except danger.

Many bachelors don’t care to be too fancy. Most don’t try to overthink it. Sometimes it’s about the effort you don’t put in more so than the effort you do.

In that case, stick with simplicity.

A classic stop sign is the perfect accoutrement to an interior design that features Spartan walls and open space. This dark red octagon is just imposing enough without being overbearing. Many bachelors choose not to hang it, but instead anchor it flat on top of an older, uglier coffee table. Voila! This kind of creativity show just how independent you can be, and what kind of handyman you are.

Choose carefully what kind of sign you go with for your bachelor pad, it can say a lot about you.

Proper Eye Care Habits

As children, many of us were plagued with the horrible thoughts of what would happen when staring directly into the sun. While some of us imagined something akin to melted eyeballs or sockets set aflame, the inherent dangers were a little more subtle than that.

Our eyes are very sensitive organs, more so than other organ in our body. Certain ophthalmic tools, like an eye ultrasound and a scanning laser ophthalmoscope can ensure proper vision, but before you have your doctor reaching for the surgical CO2 laser, there are things you can do to prevent poor eyesight. While myopia is partly inherited, bad habits can make you even more susceptible to nearsightedness. Here are some good eye care habits you should remember.

Give Me a Break

Your eyes are like any other muscle in the body. The difference here is that eyeballs work constantly from morning to night to ensure you see everything in your world properly. It would be like doing bicep curls all day. There’s bound to be some strain, some soreness, and some fatigue.

So it makes sense to give your eyes a break every now and then. Near work is the biggest culprit to this eye strain. It’s a good idea to limit the time spent performing continuous near work, which includes painting, drawing, writing, reading, playing games on a handheld device, or doing craft work with small objects.

However, for many people, near work comprises the entirety of their occupations. Office work consists almost entirely of staring at a computer all day long. In order to prevent eye strain, give them a break. Every thirty to forty minutes of near work, take a three to five minute vision break. A vision break should simply consist of staring at a distant object or looking out your window. This will reset your vision and help to clear your head a bit.

Reading and Other Forms of Recreation

We obviously have to use our eyes day to day, and while we can try to live with our eyes closed, it’s not exactly recommended. So what do we do? Well, you can still make use of your eyes, but do so intelligently.

· Reading: When reading, sit upright in a comfortable chair. The height of the table and chair should be adequate. The distance between the book and your eyes should be about 30 centimeters. Above all, make sure to read in a well-lit room.

· Using a computer: Your eyes should be about 50 centimeters from the computer screen. Adjust the screen to reduce glare as much as possible, and, of course, use your laptop in adequate lighting.

· Watching TV: Sit at least two full meters away from the TV and make sure the TV is at or below eye level.

Things to Consider When Buying a New Couch

Probably the most important piece of furniture in your living room is the couch. It gets the most use out of everything else in the living room, whether you’re catching the game, watching a movie, or playing a video game. No one wants to sit on something hard and uncomfortable, so here are a few things to consider when you’re looking for a new couch.

Lifestyle

Before you go off to look at leather couches, consider your lifestyle as a starting point for your personal needs. Do you have a family? Are you a single bachelor? How often do you use your couch? Do you have the time to properly maintain it? These are just a few of the questions you should be asking yourself before proceeding with a purchase.

If you’re a bachelor, you might consider a sofa bed. This will save space for those apartment-bound bachelors. If you have a bigger space, a sofa bed gives frequent guests a comfortable place to sleep.

If you have kids, you might want to consider a larger couch that offers space for all members of the family. You might also want to buy a couch made with a more rugged, easy-to-clean material in the event that your kids get a little too rowdy on the sofa.

Size & Color

Once you understand your own basic lifestyle needs you can begin to shop for your couch. Make sure to measure your space beforehand. You don’t want to buy a couch only to bring it home and realize it won’t fit anywhere. This includes width and height. Remember that you still have to get the couch into your home, which might require walking up some stairs or riding an elevator.

Color depends almost entirely on personal preference. It’s not necessary to choose a bright, strong color. Neutral colors are still the ideal choice. In smaller spaces, use lighter tones to create the look of a more open space.

From there, you can add color through couch accessories. Throw pillows are much less expensive and can give the splash of color you need. You can also easily change the look by simply changing pillow cases.

At the Store

When you’re at the furniture store, make sure to completely go over a desired piece. Inspect each and every section of the couch: the trimmings, the wood used, the padding, the underlying construction. Most important of all, sit on it and make sure it’s comfortable.
