Visit London’s West End

When visiting London one of the most important things to do is to catch a show and soak up the unique atmosphere. London is massively cultural and offers many shows across various different genres. The cities West End is the biggest theatre district in the world, with many large international stars performing night after night. The area is also world famous for its excellent range of theatres, shopping, hotels and attractions. Here are a few of the shows available in London at the moment.

· Matilda the musical

Roald Dahl is a national institution and his novel 'Matilda' has been turned into a west end musical. The musical tells the story of a child prodigy who is unwanted and unloved by her hideous parents. Matilda’s parents don’t understand her love for literature and encourage her and her brother to veg out in front of the television. When Matilda finally goes to school she finds comfort in her teacher Miss Honey. However she also comes face to face with the horrid, child-hating headmistress Miss Trunchbull. The performance is extremely magical and enchanting and is a huge hit for adults and children alike. If you are a massive fan of Dahl’s work the Royal mail have also just releases a stamp collection showing some of his most famous characters.

Matilda the musical is directed by Matthew Warchus and is taking place at the Cambridge theatre. For tickets call the theatre’s box office on 0844 412 4652.

· Wicked

Wicked is one of the most magical musicals in the West End at the moment. The story line tells of the prequel of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and takes the audience back to the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. You learn about the relationship between the good witch, Glinda and the wicked witch, Elphaba and how Elphaba became so evil. The whole show is a superb musical extravaganza and is most definitely a must see show. Wicked is a top favourite for audience members of any age.

Wicked is taking showing on the Apollo Victoria Theatre. For tickets call the box office on 020 7492 9930.

· Billy Elliot

Billy Elliot is another British classic. The musical tells the story of 1980’s Britain and the struggle of the one boy’s struggle growing up in a miner’s community during the Thatcher period. Set in County Durham the plot tells of a parent’s disapproval of their son’s poor performance in boxing and love for ballet. The story line highlights the struggle to become one of the best dancers in the country and the journey of opposition to support.

Billy Elliot is taking place at the Victoria Palace theatre. For Tickets call 0844 811 0055

So whether you love them or loathe them Musicals are a large part of London. This is only a small selection of shows available in London at the moment that I have enjoyed. There are many others such as the Lion king, Mama Mia, Shrek, Chicago etc, so why not go for some pre theatre dinner and catch a show. It’s a great little night out in the capital and one you must experience. And you just may never know who you may just bump into.
